Puerto Cayo is the perfect location as a home base for your vacation. You can take it easy with walks on the beach, reading in a hammock, having a fresh seafood lunch on the beach and toasting the sunset from your patio or balcony. Or, if you're into more action you won't be lacking here. In the ocean you can swim, body surf, snorkel, boogie board and surf. Puerto Cayo center is a 10 minute walk by road or beach (tide permitting)
The most beautiful beach in Ecuador, Los Frailes, is located in Machalilla National Park 20 minutes south. Five minutes south of Los Frailes is Aqua Blanca which has precolumbian ruins, a hot springs lake, hiking trails and horseback riding.
Continuing south for 10 minutes is Puerto Lopez, a small fishing village. From here there are daily tours to Isla de la Plata (Poor Man's Galapagos). If you happen to be there between July through September there are whale watching tours to view the humpbacks.
Pacoche is 35 minutes north of Puerto Cayo. This national reserve is a rain forest surrounded by dry forests. There are guided tours so you can learn about all the flora and fauna including Paja Toquilla. Panama hats are made from their leaves. It is better to go in the morning so you will encounter the howler monkeys.
If you need a city fix Manta is an hour north of Puerto Cayo. The Malecon is a great place to spend a leisurely lunch as you people watch.
